Welcome, Recruit Class #122

 

On April 24, 2026, we welcomed 16 new officers to the Service. Though they arrive with different backgrounds and experiences, they are united by a shared mission. Each brings a commitment to serve our community with professionalism and integrity. Welcome to the Service, Class 122.

Welcome, New Auxiliary Members 
 
On April 15, 2026, we were honoured to welcome 19 new members to our Auxiliary Unit. Auxiliary members are dedicated community volunteers who support frontline policing through public engagement and operational assistance. These uniformed volunteers assist with special events, crime prevention initiatives, community patrols, and emergency call-outs, all while working alongside regular members of our Service.

This First Responders Day (May 1, 2026), we say thank you to all emergency service responders for their service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to serving the residents of Waterloo Region each and every day. Click the image below to watch our highlight reel. 
Chief for a Day Contest 
 
Ever wondered what it’s like to lead a police service for a day? Waterloo Region students in Grades 5 to 8 can find out.
 
Students are invited to enter the contest by submitting an essay or video explaining how they would make a positive impact as Chief for a day.
 
The winner will step into the role in June 2026, enjoying a tour of headquarters, meeting the canine unit, exploring a police cruiser, and spending the day as Junior Chief. New this year, they’ll also present their winning essay at the Hearts & Heroes Awards Gala in November. 
 

Deadline for entries: May 4, 2026, via the online submission form.

As the seventh-largest police service in Ontario, WRPS employs nearly 1,400 members who serve the municipalities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge, as well as the Townships of Wellesley, Wilmot, Woolwich, and North Dumfries.

Community Connection
National Superhero Day
 
Kids Ability students were treated to a memorable National Superhero Day celebration at The Museum, one filled with excitement, laughter, and heroes coming to life. Thank you to all members who participated and made this day truly super. 
 
On April 23, 2026, members visited the Waterloo Chinese Business Association to discuss a number of topics, including what to expect from the police after a collision, auto theft prevention, and break-and-enter deterrence.  
Last month, members connected with the community while enjoying the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. 
Latest Investigations

Drugs and Firearms in Drug Trafficking Investigation 

 

In March 2026, members of the Drugs and Firearms Unit (DFU) launched an investigation into a Kitchener male suspected of trafficking controlled substances within Waterloo Region.

 

On April 10, 2026, DFU officers, with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team, executed a search warrant at a residence in the area of Block Line Road and Homer Watson Boulevard.As a result, officers seized two firearms, one of which was confirmed to be stolen, drugs, including suspected fentanyl, fentanyl pills, cocaine, oxycodone pills, hydromorphone pills, and amphetamine pills, and more than $36,000 in Canadian currency.
